Catalytic Converter Guide

To some, knowing what type of catalytic converter is right for them can be mindbogglingly confusing. What should I be aware of? How do I pick the correct converter for my vehicle? In light of this issue, here are some things to keep in mind when you decide to make the purchase.

Identify the Emissions Level on the Vehicle Emission Control Information tag located in the engine compartment of the vehicle.

Heavy Metal Grade OBDII

OEM Grade OBDII

EXAMPLE OF CALIFORNIA TLEV

Pre-OBDII VS OBDII Emission Test

Pre-OBDII /Traditional Test
Traditional emission test where test is conducted using tailpipe test to measure the tailpipe emission.

OBDII Test (Applicable to certain Municipals)
Newly adopted emission test where test is conducted using on-board diagnostic test by plugging a read into the vehicle’s ecu to monitor emission information. An appropriate catalytic converter is required in order for the vehicle emission information system to generate the correct reading. Generally speaking, an illuminate check engine light will result in an instant failure (Even if it is emission unrelated).

**Please consult local emission regulations to determine the correct catalytic converter for your vehicle.

Standard Load Pre-OBDII

Meets EPA Emissions Standards
(1997 or older model years)

Heavy Metal OBDII

Upgraded to Exceed EPA Emissions Standards
(1998 and up model years)

OEM Grade California OBDII

Engineered to Meet California Emissions Levels
(made for CARB TLEV, LEV, ULEV, SULEV, or EPA NLEV)

Magnaflow Universal-Fit Catalytic Converters are EPA Pre-OBDII compliant converters. They are engineered to satisfy both fitment and performance requirements of aftermarket replacement converters. Magnaflow produces these converters in a variety of configurations including traditional clam shell & more compact spun body designs. Covering both gas and diesel, Magnaflow's Standard Load Converters provide comprehensive Pre-OBDII coverage.

Magnaflow's Standard Load Converters provide the necessary precious metal loading to satisfy Pre-OBDII emission requirements.
Heavy Metal Catalytic Converters are EPA/Federal OBDII compliant converters. They are engineered to satisfy both fitment and performance requirements of early OBDII applications. As vehicles transitioned from OBDI to OBDII converters became an integral component of the emissions control system. Oxygen sensors not only monitored engine air/fuel ratios but catalyst efficiencies as well.

MagnaFlow's Heavy Metal Converters provide the necessary precious metal loading to satisfy early OBDII catalytic efficiency monitoring as well as tail pipe emissions.
OEM Grade Catalytic Converters are MagnaFlow's premium converter. Utilizing our experience in successfully developing and manufacturing CARB approved catalytic converters, we have engineered a product line to address the needs of late model 49 State OBDII vehicles. As California 50 State emissions certified vehicle sales outside of California are growing, so has the need to provide a product line that can adequately service them.

MagnaFlow's OEM Grade Catalytic Converters ensure compatibility with stringent late model OBDII vehicle emissions' requirements. Not only is the substrate volume increased, but these converters are formulated with higher precious metal content and EFN specific wash coats to satisfy each application's oxygen storage needs preventing false-fail emissions codes.

**California OBDII represents the emission standard the vehicle is applied to, not the emission standard that applied to the registration provinces / states. Using the inappropriate converter will result in failure of Emission Test.

Generally applied to newest vehicles that operate under the California OBDII standard.
